Australian Historical Association Biennial Conference 5 - 9 July 2010

Bursaries

AHA/CAL Travel and Writing Bursaries

Funding opportunity for Postgraduate Students and Independent Historians

Applications closed: 31 March 2010

The following is for information only as applications have closed. This is a great opportunity and there has been an overwhelming response.

The Australian Historical Association (AHA) in association with the Copyright Agency Limited (CAL) is pleased to announce the availability of ten Travel and Writing Bursaries linked to this year’s AHA conference to be held at the University of Western Australia and Notre Dame, 5–9 July 2010.

The bursaries are intended to encourage and support emerging historians, particularly those who would otherwise be unable to attend the conference. The bursary, valued at $600 per applicant, provides financial assistance to conference participants who have little or no institutional support to cover their conference costs.  These may include postgraduate students and independent scholars in the fields of history, heritage and museum studies. The bursary is to be used to cover travel and accommodation; the conference registration fee will be waived. Those who have already submitted abstracts to the Conference and/or paid their registration are welcome to apply. Applicants from Western Australia not requiring funding for travel and accommodation are welcome to apply to participate in the mentoring scheme and have their registration fee waived on the same competitive basis.

The bursaries will support ten scholars to attend the conference, present papers within the overall conference program and participate in follow-up mentoring which will be held during the Conference. In addition they will attend two Writing Workshops (scheduled for 5 and 9 July). Under the terms of the bursary they will be expected to submit a draft article by June 30 the revised article to the AHA’s journal, History Australia, before 30 November 2010, to be considered for publication.

The workshops and mentoring will be conducted by experienced historians and will assist the process of turning a conference paper into a journal article. The editors of History Australia, Penny Russell and Richard White, will be closely involved. A limited number of places in the mentoring scheme may be made available to applicants unsuccessful in obtaining a bursary.

Funding for this Scheme is generously provided by the Copyright Agency Limited (CAL). CAL is an Australian copyright management company whose role is to provide a bridge between creators and users of copyright material. CAL represents authors, journalists, visual artists, surveyors, photographers and newspaper, magazine and book publishers as their non-exclusive agent to license the copying of their works to the general community. www.copyright.com.au/

Applications for the AHA/CAL Travel Bursaries closed 31 March 2010. All applications will be acknowledged by email. Successful applicants will be notified by email before the end of April.

The editors of History Australia will liaise with the conference organising committee in assessing applications. Late applications will NOT be accepted. The decision of the AHA and the Conference Organisers will be final and no correspondence will be entered into or feedback given.

Acceptance of a bursary will be taken as your agreement to submit a draft article by 30 June, attend the AHA conference from 5 – 9 July, present a paper, participate in the writing workshops and mentoring and offer your completed article to History Australia by 30 November 2010.

*recent graduates should also provide thesis title, supervisor and institution.
