![]() Conference Events Archaeological Dig: Peel Town settlers’ camp, 1829-1830The archaeological excavations of Peel Town, only recently recovered in sand dunes about 14 kilometres south of Fremantle, have unearthed fireplaces, hearths, ceramics, glass and metal artefacts. They were left behind by the group of 450 people who formed part of the Swan River’s first settlement at Peel Town from 1829 to 1830. Peel Town’s uniqueness stems from its high-quality preservation and rarity, for few ‘first steps of colonisation’ sites exist in the world in the context of the great post-Napoleonic War British Diaspora. In addition, the camp’s remains are a rare and extremely important tool for gauging the British adaptation to the Australian environment. This tour provides a unique opportunity for AHA conference participants to tour the site; learn of its history and ongoing significance; and get their hands dirty in the excavations. Transport and lunch will be provided for this afternoon excursion, returning participants to Fremantle by 5pm. Please note that you need to pay for this with your registration.
